Transgender and Non-Binary Patients
At Look Natural Hair Restoration, we understand and respect the intimate and life-changing process of transitioning. Dr. Ross is a highly-skilled asset for your journey and ensures that the aesthetics of your look are a collaborative, quality achievement. For our FTM, MTF, and non-binary patients, we are truly passionate about helping you realize your gender identity.
For many transgender individuals, hair style and hairline pattern can be an integral part of achieving your identity. Whether thickening hair that’s thinned, redesigning a hairline or creating a beard and mustache, the basic process is the same as with any hair restorative method. Using either the Follicular Unity Extraction (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) procedure, hair follicles are moved from one part of the scalp to another part of the scalp or face wherever you desire.
Concerns for Transgender Patients
There are many potential hair-related concerns for transgender people, just as there are many potential solutions. The main ones to consider are:
- Hormones: Gender-affirming hormones have been linked to increased instances of androgenic alopecia in transgender men. Transmen and non-binary individuals on testosterone have reported significantly more hair loss than those not using testosterone. Essentially, testosterone use is linked with male-pattern baldness. For some transgender men, male-pattern baldness is a desired masculine trait. For others, it may come as an unpleasant surprise.
- Genetics: Transgender women are also at risk of experiencing male-pattern baldness. The dysphoria associated with male pattern baldness for transgender women can be deeply uncomfortable. A hair transplant can increase density, cover sparse areas of the scalp, and revitalize the hairline, thereby improving comfort, control and aesthetic.
Dr. Ross is highly experienced in providing his transgender and non-binary patients with the aesthetically pleasing, gender-affirming results that they strive for. Together, we can collaborate to ensure wonderful results.
Hair Restoration Solutions:
Hairline: Using innovative FUE and FUT methods, we can create a fuller, more feminine hairline for you. This reworks the masculine high-set hairline, lowering and reshaping it for a softer, more feminine appearance. Alternatively, framing the face with a sharp, more defined masculine hairline can also be achieved.
Eyebrows: Using the FUT method, we ensure that each donor hair can be longer in length, with a natural direction of growth that matches the natural curve of the eyebrow. Using personalized techniques, we can create a softer, arched brow that is associated with more feminine characteristics or a fuller, more linear and low-set brow for a more masculine tone.
Scalp: The effects of Male Pattern Baldness can be significantly reduced, creating thicker, fuller, natural-looking hair with the FUT hair transplant method. This method is usually recommended for our female transgender patients because only a small part of the donor area needs to be shaved, allowing for longer hairstyles to conceal the donor site. Transgender males may also benefit from this technique if suffering from male-pattern hair loss.
Facial Hair: For transgender men, excellent results can be obtained with hormone therapy, but sometimes a little extra density in the beard, sideburns or mustache is needed or desired. Mustache, beard and sideburn transplants can augment your masculine features and strengthen your confidence.
